My baby girl turned one in July. This is her smash cake. Its become a tradition to make my kids birthday cakes, and I love how I feel after finishing a cake for them. Its especially rewarding when I see them smile, and giggle because they are so excited to try it! I love cake decorating because of the joy and calmness that I feel from it. Its honestly a stress reliever for me, but I also love the challenge!
I have to admit it wasn’t easy! Finding the time to sit down and bake, while trying to involve my kids, was a bit challenging but we had alot of fun. My toddler helped with the batter, by pouring and mixing, and learned about essential baking ingredients. It was a great learning experience, even though I screamed a few times. This cake was definitely a labour of love, but I am proud that I was able to do it!
It’s really not hard at all, and its actually a lot of fun! Like I said, mine is not perfect. My decorating skills could probably use some improvement, but overall I was happy and my baby loved it!
*This blog post will not cover how to make a cake. You can bake any cake of your choice.

What you will need for cake decorating:
1. Cake Icing: You will need two containers of store bought icing. I used the Betty Crocker brand
Note: In order to reduce sugar content, I didn’t add cream filling inside the cake. To do this, slice the cake in half and add buttercream of your choice.
2. Artificial Flowers: You can find pretty flowers at the dollar store.
3. Floral Tape: You can find floral tape at Michaels.
Floral tape is a special type of tape that sticks to itself, and usually comes in different shades of green. When it comes to cakes, people usually wrap each individual flower stem. By tightly wrapping the stem with floral tape and twisting the end of the tape, it prevents any fluids from leaching into the cake.
4. Cake Turntable: This item is not mandatory, but it definitely helps with icing a cake. You can find a round cake turntable on Amazon or Michaels.
5. Icing Spatula: This is a must! You can purchase this from your local grocery store, Michaels or Amazon
